: She's in sight
Dear Dakinis,
Please pray for Mike. He is making an epic journey, and with a marvelous intention to boot. This wonderful man is evidence to me that young men with good hearts and terrible conduct can grow up and realize their full potential. May his travels be safe and auspicious, may he always have the support he needs, and may his virtuous aspirations swiftly and completely be fulfilled!
Good morning from the Namche Bazaar, a bustling village in the heart of the Khumbu resting just over 11,000ft. Cut from the side of a mountain in the shape of a horseshoe, Namche defines the term “sensory overload.” If one stone were to be removed from the meticulously terraced landscape I fear…
This is pretty amazing to imagine. What would these individuals, who impacted the world so profoundly with the time they had on this earth, have done if they had more time.

‘When I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in the worship of the creator.’
~Mahatma Gandhi
This idea is especially amazing if you believe that your thinking creates karma which ripens as phenomena and experience (like beautiful sunsets and reverence of such beauty)! According to my understanding of Buddha’s teachings I would revise this to say (not that I believe we should rewrite history…this is just an exercise):
“When I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my faith expands in awe of the power and beauty of positive thinking.”
Sometimes though, when I see something amazingly beautiful, I think of it as Buddha’s blessings. If positive thinking increases, the blessings of all Buddha’s are a condition of that. Beautiful appearances are the fruit of beautiful thinking, which is grounded in Buddha nature - our primordial goodness and purity - so in this sense as well beauty stems from Buddha.

From the Buddhist Geeks conference in Boulder, Colorado (where else?!).
I so highly recommend this. A smart and funny Buddhist neuroscientist talking about the complexities of “mindfulness” as a scientific term, and meditation in America.
Share your contemplations and reactions over on our facebook page!
p.s. I just discovered Buddhist Geeks youtube page and I’m probably going to post a bunch more of these :)
“You look at the picture when they’re inaugurated and four years later, they’re visibly older. It’s like they went in a time machine and fast-forwarded eight years in the span of four years.”
— Former White House physician CONNIE MARIANO, on how the stress of the presidency affects our Commanders-in-Chief.
Let’s take a moment and pray that our country’s leaders learn how to handle stress better - also take care of their bodies and minds more commpassionately!

“We have wept with you.”
-President Barack Obama, speaking during a vigil for the victims of the Connecticut shooting.
The words that President Obama spoke during the vigil were incredibly heartfelt and moving. He spoke of transcendence and love and what all humans have in common. To me, this offered a glimpse of the world leader of the future - one with fierce compassion and brilliant wisdom, plus skillful means that unites rather than polarizes. I am so grateful that this country I call home is lead by an honorable man who is so easy to love, respect, and admire. May he have a long and healthy life and even after his presidency continue to inspire all those he meets to live with integrity and work for the benefit of others. Buddha Bless America!!!

Donate your functioning but unused iPod or other MP3 player to a great cause:
Hopefully, by now you’ve seen the video clip of “Alive Inside,” the documentary capturing the wondrous results of elderly nursing home patients being re-introduced to the music of their youth. … Daniel Cohen, the man who initiated bringing mp3 players into nursing homes and thus sparked filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennet into making the documentary, is in need of more music players.
“There’s a huge need for iPod donations at many public and private nursing homes, where the interest from patients who miss their favorite music is far greater than the arrival of donated iPods to our collection centers,” writes Music & Memory, Cohen’s organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for the elderly through music.
If you have an old iPod that’s gathering dust, consider donating it to Music & Memory. The organization checks out—Cohen is the actual guy the documentary crew followed around for a year—so you can be sure your old iPod will go to good use. “We’ll accept old, new, used, and even broken or damaged iPod players that our volunteer team can check and repair if possible for use in one of our centers,” says Music & Memory. “Our residents don’t mind a few case scratches or decals.”
Click here for info on how to donate.

Hooray! Revolutionary step toward providing young girls with healthier role models and promoting healthy body image!
Israel outright bans too-skinny models
It’s a confusing world — while the average woman is a size 14 in the United States, that is also the line where plus-sized clothing starts (generally, size 14 and up). But a plus-sized model is usually around a size 8 or so (the woman in the image above, for example is a plus model), while ‘straight-sized’ models are size 0-2.
Israel’s new law mandates that models working in Israel prove that they are not malnourished, by producing medical records. (The country will use World Health Organization standards, wherein a body-mass index below 18.5 is indicative of malnutrition.) In addition, any advertisement published for the Israeli market must include a disclosure line if the model was digitally altered to look thinner.”
